May 12, 2026The platform vendors won’t tell you this. But the same AI capabilities they’re dangling to sell you on a migration? You don’t need a new platform to get them.
I’ve been at Synergex for nearly eight years. In that time, I’ve had many conversations with customers weighing whether to stay on the Synergy platform or move to something else. The reasons vary, but the conversation almost always comes down to the same question: can we get where we need to go from here, or do we have to start over?
For most of our history, the honest answer has been that not only can you get there from here, but it’s also cheaper and less disruptive than moving. That’s been true for web services, mobile, cloud, modern UIs. At every technology inflection point, the Synergy toolchain has evolved to let customers participate without abandoning their investment.
AI is the latest inflection point. And this time, I think it actually makes the case for your legacy app stronger, not weaker.
The pitch you’re hearing
If you’ve talked to SAP, Oracle, or Salesforce recently, you’ve probably heard some version of “Move to our platform and you get AI built in,” touting copilots, agents, intelligent workflows, all bundled into the ecosystem.
It’s a compelling pitch on the surface, and some of those AI tools are genuinely good. But here’s what it leaves out: those AI capabilities aren’t unique to their platform. The underlying models—Claude, GPT, Gemini, open-source alternatives—are available to anyone. The models don’t need a specific ERP to work well on your business data. Instead, they need two things: access to your data and the business context that makes the data meaningful.
That’s it. If your system can provide those two things, you don’t need to be on SAP to use the same caliber of AI tools that SAP is bundling. You just need your data to be reachable and your business logic to be exposed.
Even the bundlers are backing off
This isn’t theoretical. At SAP Sapphire this week, SAP unveiled what it’s calling the “Autonomous Enterprise,” with over 200 AI agents, a unified Business AI Platform, and partnerships with Anthropic, NVIDIA, and others. The pitch was exactly what I just described: come to our platform, get AI built in.
But buried in the announcements was a significant reversal. SAP had previously insisted that AI innovation would only be available to cloud customers. This week, they announced they’re bringing Joule assistants and agents to on-prem ECC and S/4HANA. Why? Because two-thirds of their customer base is still on legacy systems, and the cloud migration push is billions behind target. Their customers told them, in effect, “We’re not migrating just for AI access.”
SAP’s own customers just validated the argument I’m making here. If SAP had to bring AI to the systems people are already on rather than forcing a migration, that tells you everything you need to know about whether migration is really a prerequisite for AI. It isn’t.
The migration math doesn’t add up—for anyone
Whether you’re running an internal Synergy DBL application or building a product on it, the commercial argument for abandoning your platform in pursuit of AI capabilities doesn’t hold up.
For enterprise teams, a migration will likely cost tens of millions of dollars—sometimes hundreds of millions—and the better part of a decade. We’ve watched it happen to our own customers. The operational disruption, the institutional knowledge lost, the years your team spends learning a new system instead of improving the business. And at the end of it, you’re on someone else’s platform, locked into whatever AI tools they choose to offer. For ISVs, a full rewrite carries a different but equally serious cost: you freeze. Two, three, five years rebuilding what you already have while your customers wait for features and your competitors keep shipping.
The alternative is to open up the system you already own.

And for ISVs, your customers get AI-powered capabilities sooner, on top of the product they already know and trust, without you betting the company on a rewrite that may not land.
The destination is the same. One path costs tens of millions and a decade. The other costs a fraction of that, and you can start right now. You keep your source code. You keep your business logic. You keep your competitive advantage.
Why pay more to get less control?
The bigger picture
Synergex has been through technology hype cycles before. Cloud was going to make legacy systems obsolete. Mobile was going to make legacy systems obsolete. AI is the latest version of that story. What happened, every time, is that the organizations that connected their existing systems to new capabilities came out ahead. The ones that ripped and replaced spent years catching up to where they’d already been.
We’ve been making this case for years, and AI just made it definitive.
