Synergy/DE 12.2 – A new feature release

We’re pleased to announce the first in a new series of feature releases that will ultimately lead to our next Synergy/DE long-term support (LTS) release. Our focus areas for the LTS release include enhancing/extending data access, making it easier for you to run your Synergy code in .NET, and generally improving your developer experience. This release delivers several new features and a variety of quality improvements across the Synergy product set. As always, we recommend reviewing the release notes for detailed information about everything that has changed.

Synergy/DE 12.2 is available for download for Windows, Linux, IBM AIX, and OpenVMS (Alpha and IA64) in the Resource Center.

We've made two important changes to the Synergex Resource Center...

1. Update your bookmarks! There’s a new URL.
We’ve updated the URL for the Resource Center to
https://resources.synergex.com/ to keep providing a secure Resource Center experience. To ensure continued access, please make sure to update your bookmarks and have your IT team safelist the new URL.

2. New Cases "Impact" field will improve support service.
When you submit a support case in the Resource Center, in addition to specifying the Type of issue, Subject, Description, etc., you will now also specify the Impact. This additional information will help us categorize cases and improve our service to you.

If you have any questions about these changes or any feedback on the new Impact field, please reach out to Developer Support at support@synergex.com.

Select.GroupBy: What’s New and What’s to Come

By Tate Chamberlain, Software Engineer

The Select class in Synergy DBL allows developers to access data from Synergy DBMS files using syntax and concepts that are closer to SQL than to the traditional file-based approach. Since its introduction, the Select class has grown to include more SQL-like features. With Synergy/DE 12, we’ve taken another step in that direction by introducing a new class that can be used with Select: GroupBy. This feature was initially introduced in Synergy/DE 12.1 but has been refined in the recent 12.2.1.1003 feature release.

YAML Your Way to Rapid Deployment

By Sunny Wong, Software Engineer

As the expectation for fast-paced product releases grows throughout the software industry, more and more software development organizations are adopting DevOps practices and cloud-based tools to pick up the pace. One of the key DevOps techniques that makes faster release cadences possible is CI/CD, which is an acronym for “continuous integration” and either “continuous delivery” or “continuous deployment.” CI/CD encompasses practices that automate builds, testing, and deployment as a continuous process, enabling issues to surface quickly while harnessing the speed of automation. This automation generally takes place using cloud-based tools, and at Synergex we’ve adopted CI/CD via Azure pipelines, which automate these operations in Azure DevOps.

FAQ for using Synergy/DE on 64-bit platforms

Synergy/DE is available on a number of 64-bit platforms, including IBM AIX, Oracle Solaris, Linux, and Windows. Following are some questions customers have asked us as they've moved to 64-bit platforms.

1. Can I use 32-bit Synergy/DE on a 64-bit system (that supports 32-bit programs)?
Yes, since 64-bit systems support the execution of 32-bit programs, you can execute your 32-bit application using 32-bit Synergy. We do not recommend this, however, because the performance will be slower. We recommend 64-bit Synergy on 64-bit systems.

2. Can I compile and link with 32-bit Synergy/DE, but run the executable with 64-bit Synergy/DE?
No. Object files and executables built with 32-bit Synergy cannot be used with 64-bit Synergy and vice versa. You can use 32-bit Synergy on a 64-bit machine to create 32-bit executables (.dbr or .elb) to execute on 32-bit machines that are the same endian as the originating machine.
