Are you doing enough to protect your applications and data?

By Roger Andrews, Chief Technology Officer

Industry changes are requiring application developers and IT administrators to up their security game. OpenSSL will end support for older versions of its network communications security library later this year, and Microsoft will end support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 support next January, opening up those systems to new risks. Application developers and IT administrators will need to stay current and be extra vigilant to keep their systems safe.

Tech Tip

How to obtain the UTC time in Synergy

When getting the UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) in Synergy, there are a few things you should consider. UTC is a time standard—not a time zone. Although some people think it's the same as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), they are two entirely different things. GMT is a time zone and may have daylight savings in effect, while UTC, a time standard, is the basis of all the time zones.

To correctly determine the UTC in Synergy, you must take daylight savings into account. Also, because we fixed an issue in version 10.3.1 that caused the UTC value on Linux to be off by an hour, you should check the operating system and version your code is running on.

To code for UTC, call %TIMEZONE and pass the second parameter to see if daylight savings is in effect. If it is, add 60 (1 hour) to the offset time returned by %TIMEZONE.

If your code might run on pre-10.3.1 Linux, also call %SYSID to determine whether it's running on a Linux system and then, if it is, call %VERSN to get the Synergy version number. If it’s pre-10.3.1, subtract 60 from the offset time returned by %TIMEZONE.
