TECH TIP: After a new install of Synergy/DE, xfServerPlus
is failing to start
Question:
After installing a new version of Synergy/DE on OpenVMS, xfServerPlus
fails to start. The rsynd log shows that xfServerPlus
is enabled, but that didn’t start, and the log lists
98962 as the status.
Answer:
The reported status, 98962, means file not found. In this
case, it is likely that rsynd started, but a file required
for xfServerPlus could not be found. There are generally
two reasons for this. Either the file is there but a logical
is set incorrectly such that it cannot be found, or else the
file is literally not there. The file in question may be one
of the following:
XFPL.EXE,
XFPL_API.EXE, XFPL_DTL.EXE.
Here are
some things to check:
1) First,
determine how xfServerPlus is being started. Did
you manually run the SYNERGY_STARTUP.COM file? Or has that
file been added to SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM so that it
is run on system reboot? Or do you use your own start-up file?
2) Check
your environment and your start-up file to verify that these
logicals are being set in the system logical table:
XFPL_API
XFPL_DTL
SYNRTL
DBLDIR
SYNERGYDE$ROOT
The installation
sets these logicals in the SYNERGY_STARTUP.COM file. However,
if you are using your own start-up file, or if you are using
an old version of SYNERGY_STARTUP.COM, it is possible that
these logicals are not being set correctly. For example, the
XFPL_DTL logical was added in version 8.1.5. If you are using
a customized or outdated start-up file, there's a possibility
that XFPL_DTL is not being set, which means that xfServerPlus
will not be able to find the XFPL_DTL shared library.
3) If
your start-up file appears to be OK and all the logicals are
getting set, verify that the files mentioned above are in
the correct locations. XFPL.EXE and XFPL_API.EXE should be
located in the DBLDIR directory, and XFPL_DTL.EXE should be
in the BIN directory.
