TECH TIP: An xfServerPlus connection is using a dbr
instead of a dbs process
Question:
I'm on Synergy/DE 8.1.5, and I have noticed that when I start
an xfServerPlus session, I see a dbr process instead
of a dbs process in the Windows Task Manager. What causes
this to occur?
Answer:
In 8.1.5, we added a feature to allow debugging of xfServerPlus
routines via a Telnet client. When Telnet debugging is enabled,
xfServerPlus sessions use dbr instead of dbs. By
default, this feature is NOT enabled. To check this setting,
go to the xfServer/xfServerPlus tab in the
Synergy Configuration Program, select the xfServerPlus
service in question, click the Modify Service button, and
look at the "Enable remote debugging" checkbox.
For normal operations, it should be cleared.
If this
checkbox is cleared and you are still seeing dbr processes,
verify that the XFPL_DBR environment variable is not set.
See the Synergy
Language Reference Manual for more information on this
environment variable.

NEWS: SUN MICROSYSTEMS DEBATES GOING OPEN-SOURCE WITH JAVA
For some time, Sun Microsystems has been considering “applying
an open-source philosophy” to its Java software. Last
month, they debated this issue at the JavaOne conference in
San Francisco. A big concern for Sun is that going open-source
would affect Java’s “promise of compatibility.”
Supporters of the idea say that if they do not go open-source,
Java users may move to Microsoft’s .NET environment.
For more information about this debate, see this CNET
news article.

WHERE
IN THE WORLD IS SYNERGY/DE NOW?
Enhancing the experiences of sports fans worldwide
For the
motor-racing fan, the Le Mans 24 Hours is as much of an event
as any in the British sporting calendar. You know you are
part of something very special and very memorable when you
see fellow enthusiasts driving in long, carefree convoys down
from the French ports or when you see them boarding the Le
Mans bound trains clutching their racing magazines and discussing
only one topic. Many of the fans fly direct into Le Mans airport
and the buzz of excitement on board is incredible as the plane
circles La Sarthe circuit before landing right next to it.*
Many British sports
enthusiasts turn to Airtrack to arrange such journeys. A sports
tour operator specializing in football and all kinds of motor
sport in the UK and worldwide, Airtrack handles everything
from tickets and flights to hotels and hospitality. The travel
services they provide include travel by air (by scheduled
airline, charter airline, or helicopter), by rail using Eurostar,
and by “self drive” using the ferries and Channel
Tunnel. They provide the best and most convenient type of
accommodation available for the event. And they provide the
best facilities possible for entertaining and hospitality.
Airtrack
uses the Synergy/DE-based TourCAT (Tour Operators Comprehensive
Reservation System) application from Southfield Systems Limited
to manage the reservation, accounting, and management functions
of their business. From a single comprehensive database, TourCAT
is designed to deal quickly and effortlessly with the volume
of a core-package holiday business, as well as the increasingly
sophisticated itinerary-building demands of the growing tailor-made
travel sector. In the near future, Southfield Systems plans
to upgrade the TourCAT application to Synergy/DE 8.1.7 and
incorporate xfODBC functionality for their customers.
