SUPPORT
TECH TIP: Using XCALL SPAWN and a captive account on OpenVMS
Question:
When I use XCALL SPAWN on OpenVMS and I'm logged in with
a captive account, I get logged out when SPAWN executes. Can
you use XCALL SPAWN from a captive account?
Answer:
The Synergy Language SPAWN subroutine ultimately calls the
OpenVMS system routine LIB$SPAWN. By default, the operating
system restricts the privileges of a captive account, including
preventing the execution of SPAWN. This is because, in theory,
a spawned process could have more privileges than those given
to a captive account, which could cause problems and circumvent
the design of having this type of account.
In spite
of this, it is possible to work around this restriction in
a couple of ways:
- To
change the system-wide default, you can set the SYSGEN parameter
SECURITY_POLICY, bit 7 (starting at bit zero). Setting this
bit will allow LIB$SPAWN (or SPAWN) commands from a captive
account.
- To
alter on a call-by-call basis, you can set the TRUSTED flag
on a direct call to LIB$SPAWN. For example,
record
trusted_flag
,i4 ,%XTRNL(CLI$M_TRUSTED)
...
.proc
...
buffer="$@TEST"
status=%LIB$SPAWN(%descr(buffer),,,%ref(trusted_flag))
Reference:
Further information can be found in the OpenVMS documentation
for the LIB$ routines.
