Workin’ It with Workbench 9.3

By Marty Lewis, Software Engineer, Synergy/DE

With Synergy/DE 9.3 right around the corner, it’s time to give you a glimpse of the new features coming in Workbench. We’ve been hard at work building you a better development experience and enhancing your Synergy Language IDE.

SlickEdit 14
We've skipped the unlucky number with the SlickEdit versions and brought you straight from version 12 to SlickEdit 14. For the most part, you won’t notice much difference when you shift to the new editor. But there are a few new features we want to tell you about right away—either because they might trip you up or because we think you’ll really like them.

Get your ducks in a row for the Next Generation

At the risk of dating myself, I recall several years ago seeing some of our customers (who were there when I started at Synergex) entering retirement and sailing off into the sunset. I got a bit nostalgic, as many of these people really took me under their wings and showed me the ropes when I first entered this field. At the same time, I was excited to begin new relationships with their successors — the Next Generation — who would be working with me as they carried on the legacy of their predecessors.

Get Started with ChronoTrack

Introduced at the 2009 Synergex Success Partner Conference, ChronoTrack is an excellent resource for developers interested in learning about and using the latest Synergy/DE features. ChronoTrack was created by the Synergex Professional Services Group (PSG) to demonstrate the capabilities of the latest released version of Synergy/DE. It is both an application and the development environment used to build it, and it encompasses many of the modern tools and technologies available to the Synergy/DE developer today.

Give ChronoTrack a try: Watch a short webucation to get started.

Synergy/DE Tech Tip

Keep an “i” on your unloaded data

With Synergy/DE 9, a host of new variable types have been added to the language. A number of these are (or can contain) binary/integer data. Once you start using these data types, you’re going to want to start storing them in your Synergy DBMS files. This is all well and good, until you need to unload the data, and now you have the possibility of embedded CR, LF, or EOF characters in the middle of your records. Of course this issue has been around since version 5, where support for integer data was added to Synergy Language.

If you need to unload data from a Synergy DBMS ISAM file that contains binary data, use the fconvert utility and unload the ISAM file into a counted file. (Note that isload also supports counted files, but it is a lot slower than fconvert.)

Fortunately, Synergy/DE is a pretty forgiving environment when it comes to dealing with fields containing unexpected data. Read the PSG blog to gain a perspective on some of the issues you may encounter, as you expose your data and application to other development environments.
