Announcing SPC 2007

The Synergex Success Partners Conference (SPC) 2007 will take place in Sacramento, California, May 21-25

Due to popular demand, we are bringing the Synergy/DE developers’ conference back to Sacramento and extending it to include even more information-packed sessions, hands-on workshops, and great networking events.

This is an SPC you won’t want to miss! We will be featuring one of our most important releases ever: Synergy/DE 9. And since the conference will be in Sacramento (where Synergex is based), you will have the opportunity to meet and speak with many of the Synergex employees who develop and support your Synergy/DE products.

Synergy/DE 9 is scheduled for release in Spring 2007, just before the SPC. With the release of Synergy/DE 9, Synergy Language will become an object-oriented (OO) programming language, representing a next-generation jump for the product.

Programming with objects can provide many benefits, including faster development of new programs, code that is easier to maintain, and improved reusability of code. If you're not ready to program with objects, Synergy/DE 9 will still be an important release for you, with features such as strong prototyping, significantly enhanced error checking, Workbench improvements, and parent/child relationships in UI Toolkit. Synergy/DE 9 will be the foundation for future Synergy/DE solutions.

Learn all about Synergy/DE version 9, and get to know the people behind your Synergy/DE products. Plan to attend SPC 2007! Stay tuned to Synergy-e-News for details.

Change in Windows printing API font scaling

In version 8.1.7e and above, a change was made to the Synergy Windows printing API that affects the scaling of fonts.

In the fixes that Synergex made for page dimensions, the Windows printing API subtly changed the amount of scaling required for printer drivers. Now the Synergy Windows printing API uses the size of the device context rather than a computed size based on known paper sizes, and the two are slightly different (especially in devices that impose a margin around the edge of the page).

What this means is that the printed text is now somewhat larger than before, because the metafile is constructed for a smaller area and then played back to the page size, so that the actual printable area on the page and the printable area of the page calculated in the metafile will match.

The Synergy Windows printing API is now accurate in terms of font size. Some point sizes for certain fonts cannot be scaled correctly in the metafile. For example, the font Letter Gothic Line, from Seagate, only provides exact matches for 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 point, and when a program attempts to use 8 point, the TrueType font manager attempts to scale the font.

While this works fine for the majority of fonts, including other fixed fonts (such as Courier New 8-point type) and other sizes of Letter Gothic Line (such as 7- or 9-point type), it does not work for Letter Gothic Line 8-point type. (Note that this issue also existed for the Letter Gothic Line font in previous versions, but it affected different point sizes because of the scaling difference.)

Microsoft Word does not exhibit the same problem. After closely examining the output, it appears that Word is scaling the output slightly larger than the Synergy Windows printing API does. Again, we believe this is an issue with this specific font, because when using other fonts (such as Courier New) the Synergy Windows printing API now scales identically with Microsoft Word.

Our theory is that fonts with limited font size support, such as Letter Gothic Line, fail when scaled to certain sizes in a metafile. The metafile is the only essential difference in how the Synergy Windows printing API prints versus Microsoft Word.

When using a font that does not offer scaling in the point size desired, you have two options:

1. Use a different point size.
2. Use another font that better supports scaling.
