SUPPORT
TECH TIP: xfNetLink Java application connections
Question:
Is it possible to make a connection by calling a method without
first instantiating the class?
Answer: The answer depends on what type of Java application
is being used. If it is a JSP page with a 'JSP:useBean tag:'
in it, for example,
<jsp:useBean
id=xftest" scope="session" class="xfTest.xfTest">
the generated
Java servlet will instantiate an instance for you by calling
the default constructor.
If it
is a non-JSP application, you will need to instantiate a new
instance and call the connect method.
If Java
pooling is being used, the connections will be created when
the pool is populated. You'll need to get an instance of the
pool and make a call to the usePool method.
For detailed
information on this topic, see "Using Your Jar File"
and "Using Your Jar File with Connection Pooling"
in the "Calling Synergy Routines from Java" chapter
of the Developing
Distributed Synergy Applications manual.

WHERE
IN THE WORLD IS SYNERGY/DE NOW?
Easing congestion at the U.S./Canada border
Norman
G. Jensen, Inc. (NGJ) was founded in 1937 in the border town
of Portal, North Dakota. Norman Jensen began providing Canadian
businesses with the service and expertise needed for shipping
goods to the United States. A few years later, Gordon Jensen
joined the company, and together the brothers put Norman G.
Jensen, Inc. on the customs broker mapwith offices along
the Western U.S. and Canadian border.
Today,
NGJ is one of the nation's largest customs brokers with offices
from Washington to Maine and corporate headquarters in Minneapolis.
Led by a second generation of Jensens, NGJ maintains a tradition
of quality and integrity, while keeping pace with the rapidly
changing face of world commerce.
NGJ's
entire system to handle U.S. Customs transactions is based
on Synergy/DE. One component of this system is their Pre-Arrival
Processing System (PAPS), a U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border
Protection border cargo release mechanism that utilizes barcode
technology to expedite the release of commercial shipments
between Canada and the U.S. Each PAPS shipment requires a
unique barcode label, which the carrier attaches to the invoice
and the truck manifest while the merchandise is still in Canada.
The barcode consists of the U.S. Standard Carrier Alpha Code
(SCAC) and Pro-Bill number. This information is then faxed
ahead to the customs broker in the United States, who enters
it into the U.S. Customs application, Automated Commercial
System (ACS). Upon the truck's arrival at the border, the
customs inspector scans the barcode, which automatically retrieves
the entry information from ACS. If no examination is required,
the inspector then releases the truck from the primary booth,
reducing the carrier's wait time and easing congestion at
the U.S. border.
NGJ
uses Synergy/DE xfODBC and FTP to transfer the PAPS
data from their OpenVMS system to their Web server, enabling
customers to track their shipments online.
