ARE
YOU LOOKING FOR WAYS TO TAKE YOUR APPLICATIONS TO THE NEXT
LEVEL?
Perhaps
your users want to access their data remotely from clients
written in Java, Visual Basic, or Active Server Pages. Maybe
you want to offer your users the powerful features of relational
databases, or the ability to access Synergy DBMS databases
from third-party ODBC-enabled applications. Or perhaps your
users want the ability to communicate via XML documents or
integrate with third-party vendors in real time using Web
services.
With
your existing Synergy applications, it's all possible.
Synergy/DE
provides you with all the tools you need to develop the applications
your users demand. And SPC 2005 will show your developers
how to put these tools to work! At the SPC, a combination
of focused lectures and hands-on workshops will illustrate
the new functionality available in Synergy/DE and show you
how you can put these tools to work in your own applications.
Check out the SPC
2005 Web site for details.

USING
ARCHIVES TO MANAGE YOUR DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Placing
version control at the center of the development process promotes
quality and efficiency. Version control software enables you
to store source code, repository schemas, window script files,
and other application source files as archives, and it records
changes to these files as revisions. You can access the source
files and change history for any revision, making it easier
to track changes, problems, and fixes. Archives should be
central to your development process: all developers should
access the archives for the files they use, enabling the version
control software and administrator to control access and prevent
changes from being overwritten.
For fully
integrated, cross-platform version management, Synergex recommends
Serena's PVCS Version Manager. With Version Manager, you can
create and access archives on or across Windows, UNIX, and
OpenVMS platforms. And PVCS Version Manager archives are fully
compatible with other development tools, such as Microsoft
Visual Studio .NET.
Version
Manager is tightly integrated with Serena's PVCS Configuration
Builder, which enables you to build projects, interrogate
archives, and update local source copies when required. It
can determine if an archive has a more recent revision of
a file than is on a developer's machine, extract the most
recent revision, and then compile the source code, ensuring
that the developer is always working with and executing the
latest codeeven if someone on the other side of the
world has just made a change. Additionally, Configuration
Builder's cross-platform build scripts ensure identical build
results on all platforms.
PVCS Version
Manager and Configuration Builder integrate seamlessly with
Synergy/DE's Professional Series Workbench, making it easy
for you to follow an archive-centric development process.
From Workbench, you can create build files, access archives,
and at the click of a button, build your whole application.
Want to
know more? At this year's Success Partners Conference, we
will present a session on archive-centered development. The
session will include a hands-on workshop that demonstrates
the advantages of using archives, as well as how Workbench,
Version Manager, and Configuration Builder work together.
