TIMEOUT WITH WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2
A number of customers have reported many event log entries
for "MRXSMB timeout detecting link speed" since
upgrading machines to Windows XP Service Pack 2. These
errors occur when accessing network shares and mapped drives.
Although Microsoft has not publicized the exact description,
they indicate that all Windows 2000 servers (and Windows
2000 systems that act as servers) should have the latest
redirector installed to fix these problems. To get the
latest redirector, wait for Service Pack 5, or log a call
with Microsoft and request the hotfix for Article ID 867778.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS SYNERGY/DE NOW?
Helping man’s best friend in New Zealand Since
its inception in 1886, the New Zealand Kennel Club
(NZKC) has been responsible for dog registration
services in New Zealand. According to its Web site, “The
New Zealand Kennel Club brings together a diverse range of people from all
over New Zealand, united by their love of dogs.”
The NZKC uses the customized Synergy/DE-based Dog and Membership Registration
System from Gloucester Software to record the details of all pedigree dogs
in New Zealand, record all litters born, register the names and ownership of
puppies, maintain a record of all breeding kennels, support the activities
of clubs, maintain a record of members and their subscriptions, and manage
the calendar of dog-related events. The New Zealand Kennel Club recognizes
more than 150 breeds and also maintains a register of non-pedigree dogs that
may compete in dog-training activities such as obedience and agility competitions.
First written with DBL 2.0 running under TSX+ in the late 1970s, the Dog and
Membership Registration System has since been upgraded and is now powered by
Synergy/DE 8.1.5 with Windows clients accessing a Unix database via xfServer.
Recently, the NZKC held its annual National Dog Show. During the show, results
were keyed into the Synergy/DE-based application as judging progressed. A subset
of the Synergy DBMS database was exported to an external Web server, enabling
users to view the results and photographs of the winning dogs. Results were
available within minutes of the judging being completed.
For more information about NZKC, visit their Web
site.

SUPPORT
TECH TIP: xfNetLink .NET - Object reference not set
to an instance of an object
Symptom: I'm getting the following error when calling
a Synergy method from a Microsoft .NET client and passing
parameters:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object,
method=objectToWire
location=objectToWire detail=Parameter 'parameter name'
Cause: This error will occur if a parameter is not initialized
or is assigned a null value.
Solution:
Initialize the parameter. You may want to check it
again before attempting to use it, in case something
else in your program changed it to null. If it's an "out" parameter,
you can set it to blank. For example,
Dim
parameter As String = ""
Starting
with Synergy/DE 8.1.7, the xfNetLink .NET client checks
all parameter types to see if they are null before
attempting to use them and reinitializes any null parameters,
therefore you will not encounter this problem with 8.1.7
and higher versions.
