SUPPORT
TECH TIP: Overcoming the “Compile Error” when
using early binding
in a Visual Basic application
Symptom: Using early binding with xfNetLink COM generates
the following error:
Compile Error - Function or interface marked as restricted,
or the
function uses an Automation type not supported in Visual Basic.
Cause:
This error may occur when using early binding in Visual
Basic 6 and passing a non-structure array parameter
of any data type that is defined as having a "Data
passed" value of "In" in the Synergy Method
Catalog (SMC).
There are two solutions to this error:
- Change your VB code to use late binding instead of
early binding. Note that using late binding means you
will no longer be able to select your methods from a
drop down list in Visual Basic.
-
(Recommended) In the Method Definition Utility, change
the "Data passed" field for the parameter to "In/Out".
In your VB code, type the array. For example, for an
array of strings, you might use "dim a_rec(2) As
String". Then, because you have updated the SMC,
regenerate your type library. This workaround enables
you to continue using early binding and thereby provides
you with the ability to select your methods from a drop
down list in Visual Basic.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS SYNERGY/DE NOW?
In doctors’ offices throughout Kentucky
In 1988, the company
that John Dawson and Darrell Payne worked for went out
of business. The two programmer friends
decided to go into business together and started the Owensboro,
Kentucky–based Touchstone Custom Systems, Inc. To keep
their DIBOL application current, Dawson and Payne looked
to Synergex for help. “For more than 16 years, Synergex
has always been there for us,” comments John Dawson,
owner of Touchstone. “They threw us a lifeline when
we thought our application was going under.”
Today, Touchstone
develops custom software applications for the medical community.
Throughout Kentucky, individual
physicians’ offices and small clinics use Touchstone’s
Synergy/DE-based Medicoms application to help organize and
manage their medical billing and accounts receivable records.
“Our customers like the fact that Medicoms is straightforward,
easy-to-use, multi-practice software,” says Dawson. “We
try to support our customers like Synergex has always supported
us.”
Dawson and Payne
run their business like doctors on call, making house calls
whenever necessary. The two encourage
their customers to call them whenever they have a question
or problem—even if it’s in the middle of the
night or while Dawson or Payne are on vacation. “We’re
happy when our customers are happy,” explains Dawson.
Customers
are currently using a cell-based version of Medicoms; however,
Touchstone plans to create and install a Windows
and Linux version of their application in the near future.
For more information about Touchstone’s custom software,
send an e-mail message to John Dawson.
