SUPPORT TECH TIP: SIZE LIMITS FOR UI TOOLKIT TEXT WINDOWS

Question:
I'm using the UI Toolkit routines T_SETUP, T_PUTTXT, and T_EDIT to create a block of text with a maximum of 2,000 lines that are 60 characters wide. When users drag the scrollbar to the bottom of the text block, however, the last visible line is the 498th line of the text block. Why can't users scroll down to lines 499 through 2000? Is there a limit to the number of lines that can be processed with these routines?

Answer:
If you're using Windows 95, 98, or Me, this is due to an edit control limit. (On Windows, text windows are edit controls.) These operating systems support no more than 32,767 characters in an edit control. To determine if the number of characters in a text block exceeds this limit, add 2 to the line width (For example, 60 + 2), and then multiply this number by the number of lines in the text block (For example, 2,000 x 62). If this number is greater than 32,767, users won't be able to see the entire text block.

Note, however, that if you're on an operating system other than Windows 95, 98, or Me, the problem is most likely the result of a coding error.

PLATFORM NEWS: OPENVMS I64 (ITANIUM) PORT PROGRESSING WELL

While HP has been porting OpenVMS to their Itanium® architecture-based HP Integrity servers, Synergex has been working equally hard to port Synergy/DE to this promising new platform. Both companies are on track to release during the second half of this year.

In December, HP released OpenVMS 8.1—an evaluation release that enables customers to "get a jump on porting their environments to OpenVMS for Itanium architecture-based HP Integrity servers." HP is on track to deliver a production release in the second half of this year. (Recently HP clarified that their release target is the second half of this year and not June, as we and other partners interpreted from their earlier schedule information.)

At the Synergex Success Partners Conference in March, we delivered a CD containing a beta version of Synergy/DE for OpenVMS I64 to HP's Itanium ISV program manager, John Egolf, and we are currently recruiting Synergy/DE beta testers for this new platform. We plan to coordinate our release with HP's in the second half of this year.

What are your OpenVMS migration plans? If you are developing on OpenVMS, please take a moment to complete this very brief survey to let us know your migration plans. Also, please let us know if you are interested in beta testing Synergy/DE on OpenVMS I64.

See HP's Web site for OpenVMS I64 overview information and an OpenVMS to Itanium FAQ.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS SYNERGY/DE NOW?
Helping Dutch Businesses at the Pump

Netherlands-based G. van Beek Coal and Oil, Inc. began in the 1930s as a family-run coal merchant, selling sacks of coal for stoves. Currently run by the third generation of the van Beek family, the company still sells coal, but has also added unmanned gas (petrol) stations to their offerings. These gas stations are open to all consumers, but are especially designed for drivers who are driving for work and billing their expenses to an employer. Thanks to a Synergy/DE-based accounting and stock control system from High Rise Professional Systems (HRPS), these drivers can pay for their gas at these stations using a special van Beek debit card, which is convenient for the drivers, streamlines invoicing for their employers, and ensures prompt payment to the gasoline merchants.

Companies with multiple drivers on the road can supply their employees with debit cards from Van Beek. When a driver needs to refuel, he simply swipes his card at one of the van Beek stations. The gas station's automated system uploads the raw transaction data by modem to the central office for further processing. The Synergy application then creates weekly or monthly invoices for each company. These invoices are paid instantly via direct debit to the companies' bank accounts.
"Previously merchants had to wait until customers got around to paying their bills," states Jan Brier of HRPS. "Now there is no delay between transaction and payment—a significant benefit to some of the smaller merchants."

The Synergy application creates these invoices by generating a batch of transactions in a standardized format shared by all banks in Holland. This batch can be uploaded at any time using the internet-banking software provided by the banks. The invoice amounts are then directly charged to the customers' accounts and the merchant has the money in his account immediately.
Located in Veenendaal, The Netherlands, High Rise Professional Services recently migrated their accounting and stock control applications to Windows, and is currently using the Synergy XML API for data interchange and Web integration.
