TECH TIP: RETRIEVING THE NUMBER OF ROWS IN A UI TOOLKIT LIST
WINDOW
Question:
How can I programmatically get the number of rows (including
header, footer, and title bar) in a list window?
Answer:
%U_WINMETRICS enables you to do this. (%U_WINMETRICS is available
in Synergy/DE 7.5 and higher.) Use a call like the following:
%U_WINMETRICS(D_WINDOW_RECT, %W_INFO(WIF_HWND, <wnd_id>),
<rect>)
where
<wnd_id> is the ID of the list window and <rect>
is a variable for the returned screen coordinates of the window.
To get the ID of the list window (which is different than
the list ID or the ID of the input window used to create the
list), do the following:
1. Include
system.def and lstprv.def in your UI Toolkit program.
2. Immediately
after the L_CREATE call used to create the list, get the value
of glst_scrid (a field in lstprv.def). It's important to get
this value immediately after the L_CREATE call because it
will change if you create another list.
For more information on %U_WINMETRICS, see the "Utility
Subroutines" chapter of the UI Toolkit Reference Manual.

WHERE
IN THE WORLD IS SYNERGY/DE NOW?
Helping
N. H. Bragg keep the wheels turning after 150 years
Founded
in 1854, N. H. Bragg & Sons has been supplying Maine industry
for 150 years. Originally a blacksmith supplier selling coal
and bellows, anvils and hammering tools, steel and buggy parts,
the company has followed industrial development into present-day
markets with industrial, safety, and welding supplies. Today
the company is owned and managed by fifth and sixth generation
members of N. H. Bragg's family.
Celebrating
its 150th anniversary this year, the company serves a base
of more than 3,500 customers in Maine and New Hampshire, ranging
from the large pulp and paper mills, to the local repair shop.
Major customer groups also include manufacturers, forest-related
industries, fleet operators, contractors, governments, utilities,
and welding fabricators.
N. H.
Bragg uses an in-house Synergy/DE application to manage most
of its core business functions, including inventory control,
order entry, payables/receivables, and internal sales analysis.
The company migrated from VAX DIBOL to Synergy/DE 7.5 and
the Alpha two years ago, primarily to support TCP/IP applications
on OpenVMS. "Economically, moving to the Alpha made sense,"
explains Rodney Jacobs, MIS Manager at N. H. Bragg. "Our
maintenance expenses were reduced dramatically as a result."
Once on Alpha, Synergy/DE was the logical progression. "The
transition to Synergy/DE was absolutely seamless," adds
Jacobs. "We were up and running very quickly, and have
been very pleased with the quality, functionality, and vitality
of the Synergy suite of products."
One such
product is xfODBC, which N. H. Bragg uses for ad hoc
reporting in many areas of the business. "It's been great
being able to use xfODBC to get into the Alpha database
and quickly pull the information into Microsoft Excel for
manipulation and review," comments Jacobs.
The company's
150 years in business will be commemorated in a historical
book to be published later this year.
For more
information, visit N. H. Bragg's Web
site.

They also plan to improve the technical collaboration between
Sun's Java and Microsoft's .NET technologies, and Microsoft
will certify Sun's Xeon servers with Windows. The companies
