SUPPORT
TECH TIP: PREVENTING THE "SENDRECEIVE: ERROR WITH THE
HOST'S IP ADDRESS" ERROR IN THE SYNERGY HTTP DOCUMENT
TRANSPORT API
Question:
When using the %HTTP_CLIENT_GET and %HTTP_CLIENT_POST routines
in the HTTP document transport API, I'm getting a "SendReceive:
Error with the host's IP address" error if I give
the URI a dot notation address (for example, http://192.167.1.2).
How can I prevent this error?
Answer:
Make sure NetBIOS is enabled in the TCP settings that caused
the error. NetBIOS must be enabled for name resolution to
work correctly, even if the name is an address. Normally,
NetBIOS is set automatically, unless TCP/IP is not the first
protocol installed on the machine.

WHERE
IN THE WORLD IS SYNERGY/DE NOW?
Helping the foodservice industry keep country clubs, truck
stops, hospitals, and school pantries stocked and ready for
business
In the mid-1940s,
Wayne L. Norman came home after serving in the Navy during
World War II. He bought a second-hand truck with the $400
in his pocket and started selling and hauling vegetables from
Grand Rapids to grocers and restaurants in Battle Creek, Michigan.
This was the beginning of the multimillion-dollar business
known today as Norman Foods.
Today, Norman Foods
employs 60 workers, has 18 delivery trucks covering a 70-mile
radius of Battle Creek, and lists more than four thousand
items in its inventory—everything from fresh produce
to plates, glasses, silverware, and frozen foods. The company
serves more than 2,500 customers and uses a sophisticated
in-office Synergy/DE-based system to help them run their business.
The application manages payroll, accounts payable and receivable,
purchasing, inventory, outside sales, and more.
In addition,
Norman’s salespeople use laptops that are equipped with
the same Synergy/DE-based application. Salespeople visit a
customer site, enter orders, plan menus, check pricing and
inventory, and look up expanded product information. Once
orders are placed, they are transmitted to Norman’s
office. Customers can also log on to the company's Web site
(http://www.normanfoods.com/)
to access their account information and to place orders online.
Once an order is submitted, a batch file, written in Synergy/DE,
finds the order and converts it to a Synergy file, which is
checked against Norman’s inventory. Within 30 to 40
seconds, the customer receives a confirmation that the item
is in stock, and, if entered by 6 p.m., the order is delivered
the next business day.
Norman’s
entire software line was written in DIBOL until the company
decided to move to a VAX/Alpha machine. “We wanted to
keep our software investment, and another Synergy/DE customer
recommended the Synergy Development Environment,” said
Dennis Hulse, Data Processing Director at Norman Foods. “Synergy/DE
is unique because it enables us to do cross-platform development.
Not only can I write code on our VMS machine and then copy
it onto a laptop with very minor modifications, but I can
also do it the other way around, and it always runs!”
A long
way from the truck garden and asparagus patch, Wayne Norman,
along with his three sons, shares management and is still
active in this multimillion-dollar business. They strive to
uphold the principles on which the company was founded: finest
quality products, fair prices, and prompt and courteous service.
