TECH TIP: NAVIGATING SYNERGY/DE ONLINE MANUALS WITH ADOBE
ACROBAT READER 6
Question:
I upgraded to Reader 6, and now the cross-manual links in
the Synergy/DE Online Manuals don't work properly. They go
to the first page of the manual rather than to the specific
destination. Is there anything I can do about this?
Answer:
Adobe has changed the way Acrobat Reader 6 (now referred to
as Adobe Reader) handles these types of links. To make the
links work properly, select Edit > Preferences > General
and clear the "Open cross-document links in same window"
checkbox. (Note that Synergy/DE 8.1.5, scheduled for release
in October, will take care of this automatically.)

SENDING
AN ATTACHMENT TO SYNERGY/DE HELPDESK SUPPORT? MAKE SURE IT
ARRIVES INTACT
When sending e-mail to the HelpDesk Support department,
please send all attachments in a Zip file. With the increased
use of anti-virus filters on e-mail servers, a large number
of attachments do not get delivered. This is especially true
for embedded OLE objects (for example, screen shots), which
are very rarely delivered. Any questions? Just contact HelpDesk
Support.

WHERE
IN THE WORLD IS SYNERGY/DE NOW?
Helping Britain’s “best value retailer”
track purchases and more…
A division
of Wal-Mart, ASDA/Wal-Mart (ASDA) was formed by a group of
farmers from Yorkshire, England, and now boasts 259 stores
and 19 warehouses across the United Kingdom. With 122,000
employees, the store chain sells everything from food and
clothing to leisure and entertainment goods. For the last
three years, ASDA has been voted a top 10 UK employer in the
Sunday Times Top 100 Best Employers survey, and in
2002 they received the Nestlé Social Commitment
Award for community involvement.
All of
ASDA’s clothing imports are managed by the Elite Group
(Elite), an independent group of companies specializing in
the import and export of garments and other merchandise for
some of the UK’s major retailers. Elite uses the Synergy/DE-based
ForwardOffice application from Forward Computers Limited (FCL)
for all of its back-office functions, including warehousing
and distribution, importing, exporting, freight forwarding
and order processing. Included in ForwardOffice’s 60+
software modules, the “ForwardVision” supply chain
management tool utilizes Synergy/DE xfServerPlus
and xfNetLink Java technology to enable online functionality
such as up-to-the-minute order-tracking by Elite customers
like ASDA.
With the
help of the Synergy/DE XML parser, FCL recently added an XML-based,
bi-directional data exchange solution to the ForwardVision
tool. This solution enables the Elite Group to obtain purchase
order details from ASDA's systems, validate and map the information
to FCL's proprietary EDI format, and then send it to the ForwardVision
database. ForwardOffice's "event management" module
is then used to supplement each purchase order with shipment
and customs clearance information before returning the data
to ASDA at key points during the order lifecycle. As a result,
ASDA's staff can use their own systems to monitor and report
on shipping and customs clearing details at every phase of
the order process.
Having
received a very positive response to recent demonstrations,
The Elite Group is now rolling out ForwardVision to a number
of other key customers, and is using the powerful system to
attract new business.
“The
days of the traditional freight forwarding agent are long
over,” states Ken Stewart, FCL’s e-Commerce director.
“Our customers are finding their own clients more and
more demanding, and the supply chain can be a very complex
animal. Over the last five years in particular, there has
been a major shift towards providing true logistics services.
With this shift comes the requirement to provide tighter integration
between systems—the focus of our ForwardVision product.
We believe that ForwardVision will provide our customers with
a vital competitive edge when competing for new contracts.”

"We
have large vendors that provide third-party quoting and design
software packages which have the capability of exporting XML
documents for the quotes. We are now going to be able to import
the XML files into our Synergy order entry system. This has
the potential of saving us thousands of order entry hours
per year and will eliminate order entry errors that may be
occurring due to the redundant entry process. Having the XML
parser available in the Synergy Language is exactly what we
need to develop these enhancements in our Synergy application."
