SYNERGY/DE TECHNOLOGY CENTER: SPECIFYING A PRINTER ON WINDOWS
To print documents on Windows, Synergy applications typically use either the Synergy Windows Printing API (%WPR_ functions) or the LPQUE statement. For both methods, if you specify a printer, the type of information you supply and the syntax you use will depend on your Windows platform. (If you don’t specify a printer, Synergy/DE uses the system’s default printer.)

To get printer information programmatically, use the %U_PRINTQUERY UI Toolkit function. (You don’t need a UI Toolkit application to use this function; just link to tklib.elb.) You can also look up printer information by browsing the printer entries in the Windows Printers applet in the Control Panel.

See article 100001441 in the Synergy/DE KnowledgeBase for information about how your Synergy applications should specify printer names on the various Windows operating system s. (Search for “synkb100001441”.)

TURNKEY’S SYNERGY/DE-BASED tkEDGE SYSTEM USES xfODBC™ TO PROVIDE INCREASED REPORTING FLEXIBILITY TO THE CATTLE FEEDING INDUSTRY
Synergy/DE xfODBC™ enables Turnkey customers to create sophisticated on-demand reports using a variety of popular third-party tools

AMARILLO, Texas, and GOLD RIVER, Calif., June 23, 2003 – Turnkey Computer Systems (Turnkey), a premier provider of software solutions to the feedyard industry, recently announced the release of their xfODBC-enabled reporting system, which is run by the Synergy/DE-based tkEDGE application. SUPPORT TECH TIP
Q: Did you know that you no longer have to rebuild the Synergy runtime on Unix to include your custom C routines?

A: Prior to Synergy/DE 8.1, if you had custom routines written in C, you had to rebuild the Synergy runtime to make these routines available to your Synergy application. In Synergy/DE 8.1, however, we extended the Synergy DLL API to also work with Unix shared object libraries, so you can now access C routines from within your application by using the %DLL_OPEN, %DLL_CALL, and %DLL_CLOSE functions.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS SYNERGY/DE NOW?
Rated by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 10 public national universities that grant doctoral degrees, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) currently has more than 38,290 students and 880 professors. A leader in computing research, UIUC is the birthplace of the ILLIAC, one of the world's first computers, and the ILLIAC IV, which was for many years the fastest computer in the world. UIUC engineers and alumni also developed Mosaic, Lotus Notes™ and Eudora®.

Using a Synergy/DE-based application to manage all of their vendor contracts, the Campus Stores, Mail, and Receiving department at the University of Illinois purchases items in bulk, such as office supplies, furniture, lab supplies, chemicals, and computers; and then re-sells and delivers these items to individual departments at the university. Recently, the Campus Stores, Mail, and Receiving department merged with the UIUC Mailing Center and Campus Mail Distribution departments, which handle the intra-campus distribution of mail and the processing and addressing of mail for departments. In addition to vendor management, they now also use the Synergy application to bill other departments for postage and for processing of their mass mailing requests.

For more information about the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, visit their Web site.
