SYNERGY/DE TECHNOLOGY CENTER: Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) enables applications to communicate with each other.

SOAP uses HTTP and XML as the mechanisms for information exchange. Since these Web protocols are installed and available for use by all major operating system platforms, HTTP and XML provide an already at-hand solution to the problem of how programs running under different operating systems in a network can communicate with each other. SOAP specifies exactly how to encode an HTTP header and an XML file so that a program in one computer can call a program in another computer and pass it information. It also specifies how the called program can return a response.

An advantage of SOAP is that program calls are much more likely to get through firewall servers that screen out requests other than those for known applications. Since HTTP requests are usually allowed through firewalls, programs using SOAP to communicate can be sure that they can communicate with programs anywhere.

Synergy/DE's XML interface (currently in beta) helps immensely with the construction and analysis of SOAP documents. This interface will be released with Synergy/DE 8.1 in February and is available today in beta. Let us know if you are interested in signing up for the beta test.

For more information read the Synergy/DE 8.1 fact sheet.

NATIONAL TRAFFIC SERVICE INC. MIGRATES FROM DIBOL TO SYNERGY/DE, PRESERVING THEIR INVESTMENT IN SOFTWARE LOGIC AND OPENING THE DOOR TO NEW TECHNOLOGIES
National Traffic Service (NTS), a leader in the freight bill audit and payment industry, has migrated their DIBOL software programs to Synergy/DE, enabling them to harness the power of new technologies such as the Web and ODBC, while preserving the investment made in their application's logic.

A firm that audits and pays freight bills for clients such as Hewlett Packard, Northwest Airlines, Neiman Marcus, and the United States Postal Service, NTS had for the last 30 years managed internal business operations with their DIBOL-based application. Realizing they needed a faster, more advanced system to keep up with new technologies, NTS made the decision to migrate to Synergy/DE and the Alpha. "We decided to use Synergy/DE from Synergex because of its speed," comments Tom Leising, Vice President of Development for NTS. "Then, it only took us two weeks to get up and running with Synergy/DE—I wish we had migrated sooner!"

CALDERA CHANGES NAME TO THE SCO GROUP
Caldera International has changed its name to The SCO Group, which will be formal pending shareholder approval. The new name draws upon the company's significant brand recognition in its SCO OpenServer and SCO UnixWare product lines. The SCO name change carries over to these current Caldera branded solutions:

  • Caldera Open UNIX becomes SCO UnixWare
  • Caldera OpenLinux becomes SCO Linux powered by UnitedLinux

(Note that SCO OpenServer will retain its name.)

Note: Due to growing customer interest, Synergex is planning to add support for SCO Linux (powered by UnitedLinux) in Q1 of next year (with Synergy/DE 8.1).

Are you interested in this platform? If so, let us know.

To learn more about SCO's name change, or about their upcoming UnitedLinux release, see The SCO Group's Web site.

SUPPORT TECH TIP: SETTING THE IP ADDRESS FOR SYNERGY/DE xfServerPlus CLIENTS

QUESTION:
Our Windows NT client has two IP addresses. The wrong address is being used when returning from Synergy/DE xfServerPlus. What can we do?

ANSWER:
The xfNetLink client passes its IP address to xfServerPlus at connection time. This is not a value that you explicitly set in xfServerPlus or xfNetLink. Rather, xfNetLink uses the address of the primary network card as defined on your system. If you have multiple network cards, verify that the IP address you want xfServerPlus to use is the address of the primary card.
