Reminder: Object Support Ready for Alpha Testers and Synergy/DE 7.5.2 Ready for Beta Testers
As previously announced, Synergy/DE 8.1 will introduce a powerful new model for writing Synergy software: Synergy objects. These objects will be supported with a set of extensions to Synergy Language that allow classes and objects to be declared and manipulated within the Synergy/DE environment. An alpha test for the object support will coincide with the Synergy/DE 7.5.2 (to be released as 7.5.3) beta test, starting on August 12. If you are interested in evaluating Synergy object support, or beta testing 7.5.2, please let us know.

Jack Henry & Associates' Decision to Invest in Core Director™ Pays Off ... Company Achieves 100th Synergy-Based Customer Installation
Based in Monett, Missouri, Jack Henry & Associates, Inc. (JHA) is a leading provider of integrated technology solutions for financial institutions throughout the United States. Several years ago, JHA realized that they needed to provide a client/server, Windows solution for their prospective customers. In September of 1999, Jack Henry acquired BancTec Financial Systems (BFS), the Community Banking Division of BancTec® Inc., a worldwide, systems integration, manufacturing, and services company. Key to the JHA decision to acquire BFS was the Synergy-based Windows application, Core Director™. Combining over twenty-five years of proven account processing business logic with client/server technology, the Core Director application offered Jack Henry the superior scalability and flexibility they required for their Windows offerings. Key to the success of this new customer account processing and management information system was combining the proven business logic from previous legacy applications installed in over 1,000 banks, the Synergy tools, the commitment of the "Pinnacle Project" development team, and the input from a dedicated customer focus group.

"Core Director was a perfect addition to Jack Henry's collection of product offerings," states Ron Moses, Manager of Research & Development on the Core Director team. "Whether the institution is a 'de novo' (a new bank charter in organization) or a multi-bank, multi-branch holding company with up to two billion dollars in assets, bankers can now manage their total financial domain and customer relationship in the familiar Microsoft® Windows™ environment."

"Jack Henry is a company that understands community banking and the software needs inherent to that industry. We're seeing a continuing commitment of people and resources invested in product development and support," says Danny Little, Executive Vice President of Lamar Bank & Trust Company. "Considering the features you get for the money, I would put Core Director up against any system on the market right now."

Congratulations, Jack Henry! We look forward to your 1000th installation!

Rural Computer Consultants, Inc. Creates Tool to Convert COBOL to Synergy/DE
Rural Computer Consultants, Inc. (RCC), a software company that specializes in developing programs for propane retailers and mutual insurance companies, announced that they have created a tool to convert COBOL source code to Synergy/DE, the backbone of RCC's successful insurance software application.

To stay competitive, RCC knew they needed to continually enhance their COBOL-based fuel distribution application by providing their customers with functionality such as ODBC connectivity and Web-enablement. "We were concerned about the lifespan of some of our other options," stated Kevin Sheehan, executive vice-president of RCC. "Synergex, on the other hand, has always been committed to the constant evolution of their products."

Where in the World is Synergy/DE Now?
…Thanks to Synergy/DE, you and your family can enjoy an action-packed day at the Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park.

After a successful first season, Synergex customer Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park launched its second season in May. A one-of-a-kind experience combining four unique gardens and amusement rides with the mid-20th century history and agricultural roots of Santa Clara Valley, all of Bonfante Gardens' rides and attractions are powered by the Synergy-based Gatekeeper Ticketing POS (Point of Service) system from Amusement Solutions of Norcross, Georgia.

Based on Synergy/DE 7.5, Gatekeeper powers the entire park, including admission/ticket sales; group and consignment sales; food, beverage, and retail sales; and inventory control.

"While the Gatekeeper applications are running, our network's resources are still at a maximum," explains Craig Rumney, manager of information systems at Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park. "Transactions are processed quickly, any problems are resolved immediately, and families can spend the day enjoying each other and the park."

Set among 570 acres of rural countryside in Gilroy, California, Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park features acres of fun and beauty encompassing 22 rides and 20 attractions including theme gardens, food concessions, an event plaza, and 25 of the world famous Circus Trees.

Support Tech Tip: Position for Synergy/DE UI Toolkit Start-Up Window
QUESTION: How do I determine the ID of the initial window created by U_START?

I would like to set the position of the window during the USTART_METHOD. To do this, I need the ID of the window to move or position it.

ANSWER: Although that window does not really have an ID, some functions can access it via WID_CONTAINER. In your case:

xcall w_proc(WP_POSITION, WID_CONTAINER, x_POs, y_POs)

Note: The position of this window can also be specified by setting the APP_X and APP_Y environment variables.

Incorporate Advanced Grid and High-Level Spreadsheet Features into Your Synergy Applications with the FarPoint™ Spread™ Control
A new routine in Synergy/DE 7.5, %GRID_CREATE, facilitates access to FarPoint's Spread Control using the Synergy ActiveX API. And a new file, grid.def, provides the Spread control's definitions for Synergy programs.

The Spread control enables you to incorporate advanced grid and high-level spreadsheet features into your Synergy applications. Synergy/DE's ActiveX List API meets list processing requirements for most Windows applications; however, some users may require the additional capabilities the Spread control can provide.

Contact FarPoint to purchase the Spread control, then use %GRID_CREATE to access it from your Synergy program.

eBiz Guru
Q: Is there an integration solution for a medium-sized business that doesn't require our company to try to acquire an additional round of funding?

A: Until now, there have not been many (if any) integration solutions targeted at small-to medium-sized businesses that may not have the extensive funding channels employed by large organizations. This was the driving factor behind the Synergex mission to bring an affordable integration solution to market for small-to-medium sized businesses. These businesses have unique needs, one of which is to develop a closer, more personalized relationship with their customers. Data and application integration transparently accesses and combines customer information gathered at various points throughout the business, then presents all the data in a single view screen for the convenience of staff members who need the information. Synergex offers this integration as an economical and surprisingly rapid solution.

NOTE: Although the eBiz Guru has a great wealth of wisdom, we have asked him to share with us only the answers to eBusiness questions in the areas of applications, integration, wireless, and e- commerce. The Guru welcomes your questions.
